Crop report: Winter storm lessens drought conditions

A wintry blast brought snow and ice to Oklahoma last week.

Precipitation totals averaged 3.09 inches across the state, with the northeast district reporting the highest totals at 4.46 inches.

Drought conditions were rated 52% abnormally dry to severe drought, down 11 points from the previous week, according to the Oct. 27 U.S. Drought Monitor Report. Additionally, 32% of the state was in the moderate to extreme drought category, a six-point drop from the previous week.

Across the state, temperatures averaged in the low 40s. Here’s a look at how crops fared:

Small grains: Planted winter wheat reached 88%, down four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Emerged winter wheat came in at 71%, down 10 points from the previous year and five points from normal.

Planted canola reached 81%, up 32 points from last year but unchanged from normal. Emerged canola reached 58%, up 58 points from last year but unchanged from normal.

Planted rye reached 90%, up nine points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Emerged rye came in at 50%, up 19 points from the previous year but down 15 points from normal. Planted oats reached 46%, up 14 points from last year but down three points from normal. 

Row crops: Harvested corn reached 90%, unchanged from last year and from normal. Harvested sorghum came in at 60%, down six points from the previous year and 10 points from normal.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 86%, up seven points from last year but unchanged from normal. Harvested soybeans reached 42%, up three points from the previous year but down five points from normal.

Mature peanuts reached 93%, down one point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Harvested peanuts reached 63%, down three points from last year but unchanged from normal.

Harvested cotton reached 28%, down four points from last year and six points lower than normal. 

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 41%, up 41 points from last year and 11 points from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 60%, up one point from last year but unchanged from normal. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 7%, up six points from last year but down 28 points from normal. 

Pasture and livestock:

Pasture and range condition was rated at 64% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 86% good to fair.
