FORT SILL – The Army post is conducting a 12-day “Health and Safety Standdown” that minimizes the workforce to just essential personnel, in an effort to protect military personnel and the public during the coronavirus health crisis.

The stand-down started March 26 and continues through April 6, according to the Fort Sill Public Affairs Office.

Essential tasks that Fort Sill continues to perform during the stand-down include basic combat training and the required support agencies needed to run that operation.

Gymnasiums will be closed for a short time to allow for a thorough “deep cleaning” and to put in place additional social distancing and hygiene measures.

These are but a few of the steps being taken at the post to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“We are committed to maintaining the Army’s fighting strength and continuing with our mission here at Fort Sill, but our top priority is to reduce the spread of this virus while simultaneously maintaining our training capabilities and mission readiness,” said Maj.

Gen. Kenneth Kamper, the commanding general of the Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill.

Commanders continue to encourage and enforce strict hygiene and avoidance of areas where transmission is likely high, as well as increased social distancing.

“Our community and daily lives will be impacted by the recommended measures that are or may need to be taken in order to protect your health and safety during this rapidly changing event,” Kamper said. “There will be impacts related to travel, schools, child and youth programs, health care clinics and commissary facilities. Together, we can prepare for the real possibility of restricted access or closure of these locations, and we ask your patience and adherence if and when actions need to be taken.”

Reynolds Army Health Clinic can be contacted at 580-917-8475, and the COVID-19 hotline number is 1-800-984-8523.
