Southwest Ledger LAWTON – Westwin Elements is constructing a “state-of-the-art nickel/cobalt refinery” in southwest Lawton that “marks a significant step toward reducing America’s reliance on foreign countries for its raw material supply chain…” The pilot project will generate nearly 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, according to Richard Rogalski, executive director of the Lawton Economic Development Authority and Lawton’s former deputy city manager. Additionally, chemists and engineers contend Westwin’s facility would be safe.

Mayor Stan Booker wants Lawton voters to extend the PROPEL CIP program for six more years and earmark some of the tax revenue for specific programs, such as street maintenance, water/sewer system repairs, economic/industrial development incentives, and a modern traffic signals system.

This weekend, I like thousands of others gathered for college graduations. This is a time of great joy. For myself I watched my oldest son walk across the stage at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma where I have taught for the past 13 years. Best graduation I have attended. I walked across a similar stage 24 years ago at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. That prestigious institution awarded its first degrees in 1700, and while in many ways the two graduations looked similar the 300-year time span has also brought about some major changes.
