I cannot believe that in 2023 we are still confronting issues over age and gender.

But here we are. In my career, I have faced – and continue to face – them both. I am sad to admit that when I first faced these issues, I allowed them to create an emotional response within me. Now, I acknowledge them, assess the person making the comments, and try to see their perspective. Not to change, but to try to understand why they feel they have the right to say such things, and how to best deflect the comments.

I choose to respond with knowledge. Rather than justifying why I am the right person, I allow my experience, knowledge, and talents to speak for me. This is not always the best solution. I approach every situation with the question of how much time and energy something will cost me. If I judge the cost to be more than I am willing to pay, I move on.

At some point in our careers, we will all face sexism, ageism, racism, or other limiting beliefs. My advice: be prepared and know you will face challenges. Choose your responses before you are in the heat of the moment. Also, take the time to decide how you will defend others in these situations, and how you want to be perceived.

Here are my five tips for overcoming ageism and sexism:

1. Be aware of stereotypes. The first step to overcoming ageism and/or sexism is to be aware of stereotypes that exist. Ageism is discrimination against someone based on their age, while sexism is discrimination against someone based on their sex. Stereotypes can lead to people being treated differently, denied opportunities, or even harassed.

2. Challenge stereotypes. Once you are aware of stereotypes, you can start to challenge them. This can be done by speaking up when you see someone being typecast, or by educating others about the harmful effects of ageism and sexism.

3. Be confident in your abilities. It is important to be confident in your skills, regardless of age or sex. This will help you to overcome any challenges that you may face.

4. Build a strong support network. Having a strong support network of friends, family, and colleagues can be invaluable. These people can provide you with emotional support, advice, and practical help.

5. Don’t give up. It is important to remember that you are not alone in facing ageism and/or sexism. There are many people who are tirelessly working to combat these forms of discrimination. By following these tips, you can help to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace and society.

No matter how you choose to handle these issues, be prepared to stand strong and steady. And remember, you are setting an example for others. Make sure the example you set is one of which you can be proud.
