LAWTON — Southwest Ledger has confirmed Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents are actively investigating allegations of impropriety by Lawton City Councilman Jay Burk.

OSBI agents working with the Comanche County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Friday the agency is looking into undisclosed allegations against Councilman Burk.

Hilliary Media Group LLC, doing business as the Southwest Ledger, filed a lawsuit April 21 against the City of Lawton and Councilman Burk alleging violations of the state’s Open Records Act.

The lawsuit was filed after the city refused to provide certain records requested by Southwest Ledger reporters, specifically, communications on Councilman Burk’s personal telephone that pertain to, “His activities in an official government capacity as a member of the City Council of Lawton and any related committee appointments…”

Thus far, neither the City of Lawton nor Councilman Burk have provided the records requested. The lawsuit remains active in Comanche County District Court.

Southwest Ledger staff members interviewed by OSBI agents are cooperating with the investigation.
