LAWTON – Construction on a sewer main in southwest Lawton is progressing, and amendments to contracts on two other sewer line projects were approved last Tuesday by the City Council.
Almost a mile of sanitary sewer lines are under construction in southwest Lawton, west of Sheridan Road between Bishop Road and Coombs Road. The project involves installation of 2,250 linear feet of 18-inch diameter PVC sewer line and 2,802 linear feet of 27-inch diameter sewer main in the North Wolf Creek Branch project.
The work is being performed in-house by the city’s Sewer Construction Division and is approximately 25% complete, Public Works Director Rusty Whisenhunt told Southwest Ledger.
Also Tuesday the council agreed to pay Garver up to $250,000 for engineering services that will include designing, bidding, and construction services on a project to rehabilitate a little more than 1.2 miles of sewer mains in Lawton.
Records indicate approximately 6,500 linear feet of new 14-, 16- and 18inch pipes will be installed, and several manholes will be replaced, at various locations in town.
Another amendment to a contract will pay Garver up to $405,500, for engineering design, bidding, and construction services on replacement of three miles of sewer mains at numerous locations in Lawton.
Both projects will feature “pipe bursting.” That is a method of trenchless sewer repair that replaces underground pipes by forcing the existing pipe to “burst” by feeding new HDPE (highdensity polyethylene) pipe through and into its place. The old line breaks as the new pipe is pushed or pulled through it, and the fragments dissolve into the soil.
