ALTUS – Altus City Council held a special Municipal Authority Meeting on Nov. 17. During the special meeting, the council voted to approve the construction contract for a new traffic signal at the intersection of E. Tamarack Road and N. Park Lane.

The approval came in a unanimous vote from the attending Altus City Council members, acting in their dual capacity as the Board of Trustees of the Altus Municipal Authority.

According to the council, the City had requested bids for a new traffic signal at the intersection, and after review, it was determined that Traffic Signals, Inc. of Edmond had the best bid. The contract with Traffic Signals is not to exceed $200,000.

“This is the traffic light we’ve been waiting for,” said Altus City Manager Gary Jones. “We got the bids so we’re going to ask the council to approve so we can get started.

Mayor Jack Smiley told the council members in attendance that he had been asked by residents in the area where the traffic light will be placed if they are going to have sidewalks and ways to get across the street.

“Yes, there will be a separate bid on the actual installation of the sidewalks,” Jones told Smiley. “This is for the traffic light.”

Smiley responded, “I want to be comfortable when I tell them that it will all be there.” There was no estimated time of a completion date.

“The City of Altus looks forward to getting the new traffic signal completed and the improved safety and traffic flow that it will provide,” the City Council said in a statement. “Work on the new signal will begin shortly. Approval of bids for new sidewalks and curbs at the intersection will be discussed at a future meeting.”
