DUNCAN — A commercial bus company will bring 10-15 new jobs to Duncan as part of its customer support network which will locate here effective Aug. 1, according to an economic development official.

Lyle Roggow, president of the Duncan Area Economic Development Foundation, confirmed Model 1, of Indianapolis, Indiana, will begin operations on or about Aug. 1. The company will initially use a 10,000 square-foot building for its work and eventually build a 40,000 square-foot facility on a 13-acre tract of land in the Eastland Industrial Park. That facility should be fully operational in 2026.

The number of new jobs could increase to 40-60 over the next two years.

Model 1 sells commercial buses and vans with about 20 locations throughout the country providing support services such as vehicle customization including retrofits, vehicle wraps, restoration of commercial vehicles and customizing for ADA and handicap requirements. The company also provides a variety of other services that include distribution, maintenance service, parts, financing and insurance for a variety of internal combustion, alternative fuel and electric commercial vehicles.

“It’s a very nice company to have in our city,” Roggow said. “We have a community that shows we can provide solutions if they have a problem.”

The economic development foundation used incentives to lure Model 1 to Duncan, including a payroll enticement where the foundation will pay $4,000 to the company for every job that pays more than $40,000 while also providing specific benefits. In return, Model 1’s arrival in Duncan helps the business sector diversify.

“Model 1 is a sizable family business and it’s been a pleasure working with them,” Roggow said. “We’re excited because of the different types of jobs and skill sets they bring. It’s healthier for our community. If you rely on one major company and there are layoffs that’s not a fun thing to go through. It’s tough on business and families.”

Duncan Chamber of Commerce President Chris Deal said his organization is “excited” about Model 1 coming to Duncan.

“We’re thrilled about the prospect of having 15-20 new jobs,” he said. “They have a good payroll and serve clients coast to coast. It also allows us to diversify and include a new type of business in addition to aerospace, manufacturing and oil and gas. I think this will show others the value of moving their company to Duncan.”

In a prepared statement, Model 1 President Tony Matijevich said the selection of a new location is critical.

“Duncan, Oklahoma, is strategically located for coast-to-coast client needs, has a great workforce and training facilities, and has demonstrated a local commitment to our success.”

Duncan’s economic development foundation stressed in its request for proposals (RFP) the importance of the Red River Technology Center which educates students in a variety of fields that will be used at Model 1.
