Comanche County officials celebrated the opening of a new bridge Monday.

The county hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the bridge, located on the southeast side of Lawton near Coombs and Flower Mound roads. The ceremony attracted a group of 12 to 15 people, including representatives from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation; the Oklahoma City-based engineering firm CEC, which worked on the project; and state Rep. Trey Caldwell.

The construction firm Frontier Bridge built the concrete bridge, which replaced an old truss bridge, Comanche County Commissioner Gail Turner said Wednesday. He said the new bridge is wider, safer and sturdier than the old bridge, and it will do a better job of accommodating area traffic.

“I think the safety and convenience of it will make a big difference for people traveling out there,” said Turner, who represents the Eastern District on the commission.

Turner said the bridge cost about $1.3 million, which was financed with County Improvements for Roads and Bridges Program funds.
