Crop report: Wet start to June lessens drought status

Rainfall totals averaged 1.50 inches across Oklahoma for the week of May 31 through June 6, with the southeast district reporting the highest total at 2.76 inches.

Drought conditions were rated 16% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 20 points from the previous week, according to the June 1 U.S. Drought Monitor Report. Additionally, 6% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, down two points from the previous week.

Across the state, temperatures averaged in the high 60s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to surplus, while subsoil conditions were adequate to short. 

Here’s a look at how crops fared last week: 

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 45%, down 17 points from the previous year and 30 points from normal. The first cutting of other hay reached 50%, down four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. 

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 95% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 93% good to fair.

Small grains: Winter wheat harvested reached 2%, down 14 points from the previous year and 15 points from normal.

Canola coloring reached 65%, down four points from last year and 21 points lower than normal.

Rye harvested reached 10%, an increase of two points from last year but one point lower than normal.

Oats jointing reached 92%, up three points from the previous year and two points from normal. Oats headed reached 67%, up nine points from the previous year but down five points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 78%, down seven points from the previous year and 11 points lower than normal. Corn emerged reached 68%, down seven points from last year and 13 points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 33%, down four points from the previous year and 14 points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 36%, down 35 points from the previous year and 21 points from normal.

Peanuts planted reached 47%, up one point from normal but down 24 points from normal.

Cotton planted reached 44%, up 18 points from the previous year but down nine points from normal.
