DUNCAN – Duncan’s franchise agreement with Public Service Co. of Oklahoma will remain in place for another two decades.
A proposal to extend the agreement passed easily in the June 18 special election, with 2,582 voters supporting the extension and 681 voting against it, according to unofficial results from the Oklahoma State Election Board.
Earlier this year, the Duncan City Council voted to extend the agreement and call for a special election on the issue. The agreement, which required voter approval, allows PSO to continue providing electric service to Duncan residents.
Three electricity providers – PSO, the City of Duncan and Cotton Electric Cooperative – provide power to Duncan residents. PSO’s franchise agreement with the city is nonexclusive, meaning other power companies may seek similar agreements.
The current agreement with PSO was set to expire June 1, but now it will remain in place for another 25 years.
