Election packets available for council candidates

Body

Residents interested in running for Lawton City Council seats in Wards 1, 2, 6, 7 and 8 can now pick up election packets at the City Clerk’s Office, located inside Lawton City Hall at 212 SW 9th.

Wards 1 and 2 are appearing on this year’s ballot due to mid-term appointments made following vacancies on the City Council. Under the City Charter, individuals appointed to fill a vacant council seat serve temporarily until the next scheduled election.

At that time, the seat is placed before voters for the remainder of the original term.

As a result, the candidates elected for Wards 1 and 2 this cycle will serve the remaining one year of those unexpired terms before the seats return to the regular election cycle in 2027, with a new term to begin in 2028.

The official filing period is set for June 15-17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, at the Comanche County Election Board, housed in the Comanche County Courthouse.

To be eligible, candidates must be registered voters residing in the ward they seek to represent for at least six months prior to filing. Those elected will serve a three-year term on the Lawton City Council.

Key dates:

•Primary Election: Aug. 25.

•General Election (if needed): Nov. 3.
