ALTUS – Altus City Council recently confirmed the dates for the city’s upcoming election.

Four ward-specific City Council seats as well as the office of city clerk treasurer will be up for election, with the primary election set for Feb. 9, 2021. A general election will be on April 6 if necessary.

Qualified candidates for any of these offices must file declarations of candidacy with the Jackson County Election Board, 101 N. Main St. in Altus. Declarations must be submitted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. before Wednesday, Dec. 9. Municipal officeholders in Altus are elected to four-year terms.

If only one person files as a candidate for any office, that person will be considered elected and no primary or general election for that office will be held. If only two people file as candidates for any office, both shall be nominated, and the primary election shall serve as the general election for the office for which they filed.

If more than two candidates file for any particular elective office, the candidates who receive the most votes in the primary election shall be nominated to face off in a general election, unless one candidate in the primary election receives a majority of all votes cast for that office; that person will be elected, and there will be no general election for that particular office.

Candidates for city clerk treasurer shall be elected by a majority of the registered voters of the city voting in an at-large election.

Contests of candidacy may be commenced by filing a petition with the Jackson County Election Board secretary no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.
