LAWTON - Lawtonians living in Ward 5 were surprised last week by a statement released by Lawton City Councilman Dwight Tanner.

Tanner, who has served Ward 5 since July 2013, has decided to not seek reelection for the seat during the Sept. 10 Special Election. He instead expressed wishes to focus his attention on his faith, family, business and supporting local organizations.

“I plan to focus more on serving God and being more active in His Holy Church, especially through our local St. Vincent DePaul Society (Blessed Sacrament Parish), putting my family and their needs first, focusing on our family business and
being a better member in the Lawton AMBUCS. These plans will take  up most of my time and efforts.

“I believe in the instructions given in the Bible, not to be selfish and not to spend too much time trying to impress others; to be humble and to think of others as better than yourself (Philippians 2:3).

His statement also mentioned that “politics can be divisive and cause hard feeling between even the closest of family and friends.”

ALLAN HAMPTON - WARD 5

With Tanner stepping out of the race, Allan Hampton will become city councilman for Ward 5.

Tanner spoke of Hampton’s dedication to the ward, stating he had been to most city council meetings over the past five years. Tanner added that he will fully support Hampton and he admired his“sincerity and confidence.”

In his closing remarks, Tanner expressed his gratitude to Lawton for allowing him to serve on the council. He plans to serve to the best of his ability until his last day in office.

JAY BURK - WARD 4

Councilman Jay Burk ran unopposed. He will continue to serve Ward 4. Burk has served Ward 4 for 15 years. Due to term limits, this will be his last term.

SEVERAL VIE FOR WARD 3

Four candidates are in the running for Ward 3.

Derek Berry, Linda Chapman and Donna Mata are all vying against Councilman Caleb Davis for Seat 3. Davis has held the seat since January 2017.

Though multiple attempts were made to contact Councilman Burk, none were successful.

When Ledger staff members contacted Councilman Tanner, he referred them to the press release.

Voting for the Special Election will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
