LAWTON - On Feb. 11 of 2020, citizens have the opportunity to ‘Propel’ Lawton at the polls. Residents have had the opportunity to learn, ask questions and choose their stance on how we move into 2020.

Young Professionals of Lawton has been a crucial part in this process by hosting events, visiting different organizations and, most importantly, speaking to other young professionals about the future of Lawton.

We have taken on the task to stand behind this CIP for the sole reason we want to see an investment where our future, our families’ future, and the upcoming generations’ future have a sustainable, thriving community to live in.

As young professionals, we must understand how important it is that we show up on Feb. 11 to vote ‘yes’. That we, alongside the rest of the community, take hold of our future and ensure that we have a say in how we move forward.

Within this CIP, quality of life is being addressed and, for us, this is one of the most important subject matters of our time.

We all want a more walkable city; we all want a city more appealing to the eye; we all want a safer community to live in; and we especially want a city we can grow with.

We also realize this takes investment; this takes us saying, “We are willing to pay for a better tomorrow.”

The great thing about this CIP is that it’s not raising tax- es any higher than they already are. This process simply extends the current tax and addresses the very needs all citizens, from one time or another, have expressed as a concern.

This CIP covers a vast area of enhancements for Lawton, including improvements to current parks. This will create viable areas to attract visitors and citizens.

A focus on the beautification of our city and understanding the importance of it and how it can impact, not just how we think and feel about where we live, but also how it can lower crime and how it changes our mentality to take better care of our community.

This CIP will also bring better streets and more sidewalks, which provides a more walkable city; one that can lead to a healthier environment and a safer one to travel in.

It addresses better technology for our city, industrial development, airport renovations and much more. All focusing on a city we can be more proud of.

I leave you with the words of another young professional - one who is in this community. She is a military spouse and a mother. Brandi Sims, MBA.

“As both a young professional and mother, I can’t imagine not making the investment in my community today that will have a significant impact on the future of my children.

“The ‘Propel’ Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) plan is the investment of today for not only a better future but for the future of Lawton. Growing up in this area, I can recall the many years of training and practice at several of the recreation centers provided.

“Taking the same steps of great athletes in our area from decades prior and now watch- ing my daughter practicing for her first game of basketball - none of this would be possible without the investment of residents, both past, and present, towards youth programs and facilities.

“Each time I visit a recreation center, playground or park, I am reminded of the great history each location has, and how important it is to continue improvements to keep it. This is an opportunity as residents to have a voice and support positive growth that not only affects those of us here today, but for the future residents who will reside here tomorrow. Be a part of the seeds that are planted today to give our children a future,” she said.

I encourage everyone to attend our next CIP Presentation on Jan. 30, 5:30 p.m. at the Great Plains Technology Business Development Center, 1601 Park Ridge Blvd, Lawton.
