Body

This is a prototype of an anti-panhandling sign that will be posted at multiple locations in Lawton to discourage panhandling and encourage donations to established charitable organizations.

Christine James, director of the Planning Department, said that initially eight signs will be installed at three locations: Cache Road and 11th Street/ Fort Sill Boulevard, Sheridan Road and Gore Boulevard, and at Cache and Sheridan roads.

The City Council on July 9 endorsed the Homeless Action Committee’s recommendation to also install four panhandling signs at the intersection of Southwest 11th Street and Southwest Lee Boulevard and the intersection of Southwest 38th Street and Lee Boulevard.
The goal is to ultimately place 68 of the signs at 24 locations throughout town, James said.
