Donald Wayne Smith looks on as Mayor Stan Booker reads a citation honoring him for his “swift and selfless thinking while on the job.” Smith, a window installer, detected a natural-gas leak at a customer’s home, evacuated the elderly occupants and notified the gas company. Smith’s actions “serve as an inspiring example of how one person’s intervention can safeguard lives” and exemplified “the spirit of a Good Samaritan,” the Mayor’s Citation of Valor declared. This fire-damaged house at 2324 SW Cornell Avenue in Lawton has been added to City Hall’s list of properties deemed to be a dilapidated and dangerous nuisance subject to demolition at the Lawton owner’s expense. The structure is an example of blight and is not habitable, Neighborhood Services Supervisor Jon Jernigan informed the City Council. PROVIDED
