LAWTON – A groundbreaking ceremony for the Mathis Brothers retail furniture complex has been delayed until September, a company spokesman said.
The Mathis Brothers project will be part of a new retail development totaling 200,000 square feet of space. The project will be located at 4800 N. Cache Road, company spokesman Kerry Tramel said.
“We’re not there yet (for a groundbreaking),” he said. “Hopefully, by September we will be doing that.”
The Mathis Brothers development will include a Sleep Center and an Ashley Home Store. The new development, which will set on a 19-acre parcel, was initially scheduled for completion by the third quarter of 2021, but that timeline has been pushed back for undisclosed reasons. The Mathis Brothers stores will initially employ about 75 people.
“Lawton is a vibrant town and it’s stronger now than ever before,” Tramel said in a previous Ledger interview. “It has a much brighter future than its past. It’s a hub where people travel from quite a ways around to do their shopping.”
Mathis Brothers opened one of its Sleep Center locations in Lawton about a year ago. The success of that store was instrumental in the company’s decision to build the new development.
