Aug. 23 ballot to include county runoff vote

Body

LAWTON – The Aug. 23 ballot will include a runoff election for the District 1 seat on the Comanche County Commission, in addition to the candidates for Lawton City Council.

Incumbent Commissioner Gail Turner is competing against challenger John O’Brien in the GOP race for the District 1 seat. The winner of the runoff election will claim the seat, as no Democrats are running.

  • The candidates for Lawton City Council are as follows:

  • Councilwoman Linda Chapman, who represents Ward 3 and is seeking a second

term.

  • Cartessa Smith, who is also seeking the Ward 3 seat.

  • Barbara Curry, who is one of three candidates running for the Ward 4 seat. Curry

did not respond to requests for an interview before the election.

  • George Gill, another candidate from Ward 4.

  • Eric Sharum, who is also seeking the Ward 4 seat.

Councilman Allan Hampton, who represents Ward 5, is up for reelection this year. However, Hampton did not draw an opponent and will not appear on the ballot.

The Town of Medicine Park and Central High Public Schools both have propositions on the ballot. Medicine Park wants to reinstate the town’s lodging tax, which expired in June, and raise it from 5.5% to 7.5%.

Central High is asking voters to approve a $14.5 million bond issue to finance construction of a new high school, according to the district’s website. The bond issue is a continuation of the district’s current bond program and will not result in a tax increase.
