This abandoned, blighted house at 1214 NW Smith Ave. was one of 13 residential structures the Lawton City Council condemned recently as dilapidated and dangerous (D&D) and thus subject to demolition. City Hall typically pays a contractor “anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000” to demolish a D&D structure, according to Caitlin Gatlin, the city’s communications manager. “It’s according to the particular piece of property.” The city has razed nearly 250 D&D structures since 2020, records show. Neighborhood Services Supervisor Josh White said the list currently numbers 109 structures: 26 awaiting demolition, two awaiting asbestos testing, and 43 awaiting the owners’ decision whether to remodel or demolish. Owners of the other 38 secured permits to renovate their property and must demonstrate continuous progress.
