Lawton animal shelter to be relocated

An alternate location for Lawton’s animal shelter and adoption center was approved by the City Council.

The council also authorized city staff to move the facility from the current site at 2100 SW 6th Street to the old Lawton fire station at 1701 SW Lee Blvd.

“There are concerns about the cost to bring the current building up to standards and increase the necessary work area while remaining within the allotted budget,” Animal Welfare Supt. William Blasengame said.

The old fire station is “structurally sound,” he said. “Our engineering and design teams have already researched the site and think it would better accommodate the needs of the facility and provide space for future growth.” In addition, it also would “ensure that the animals in our care will not be displaced during the restructure and remodel of the facility.”
