A wind turbine erected in a wheat field near the Kay County community of Kildare, which is five miles north of Ponca City, collapsed last week for no apparent reason. The mishap was reported to the Kildare Fire Department at 7:23 a.m. Feb. 25, Fire Chief Travis Harris told Southwest Ledger. The incident was “bizarre” because the wind speed at the time was 3 to 12 miles per hour, he said. No injuries to humans or livestock were reported. The structure was 300 feet tall and its blades were perhaps 200 feet long, and it was erected about eight to 10 years ago, Harris said. Duke Energy formerly owned the wind turbine but sold it a year ago to some other company, he said. Engineers and investigators were notified and will “tear apart” the wreckage to determine why the electricity generation tower collapsed, Harris said.
