In just a few weeks, Oklahomans will trek to the polls for the state’s primary election.

This year is notable because voters will begin the process of choosing a governor while, at the same time, several seasoned lawmakers will be forced out of office because of term limits.

Norman’s House District 44 is the perfect example of this.

In addition to making choices for governor, Democrats in Norman are being forced to replace their well-known state Representative, Emily Virgin. Virgin has spent her final years in office serving honorably as the House Minority Leader.

And while we haven’t always agreed to the good representative, we acknowledge that she is dedicated, hardworking and genuinely trying to make Oklahoma better.

And we believe the man seeking to replace her has the same attitude.

Jared Deck, a musician, business and self-described ‘stay-at-home dad,’ is seeking the Democratic nod for House District 44. Deck is a product of Oklahoma’s education system. He has a bachelor’s in music performance from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a deep understanding of the needs of Oklahoma’s public schools.

He’s also no stranger to hard work, having already spent a great deal of time serving on several boards, associations and groups.

In addition to his political advocacy and organizing, Deck has served on the Moore Norman Technology Center’s Board of Education, as a member of the Board of Directors for Variety Health Care, a member of the Sooner Rotary Satellite Club and on the SWOSU Alumni Association’s Board of Directors.

We believe Deck understands public service, public policy and wants to improve life in Oklahoma.

Unapologetically progressive, Deck would be an intelligent and articulate voice for the voters of HD 44.

Replacing Rep. Virgin will be a difficult task but with Deck as their new representative, voters in House District 44 might just discover they found the right solution.
