Altus Air Force Base receives Business Partnership Award

ALTUS — Western Oklahoma State College recently honored Altus Air Force Base with the Business Partnership Excellence Award through the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, the college announced.

From stay-at-home mom to business owner

ALTUS – Kenya Villarreal’s transition from stay-at-home mom to business owner has been a “surreal experience” since opening Bayou Booze two weeks ago. Bayou Booze, located at 115 W. Walker St., is the first drive-through daiquiri outlet in Oklahoma, Villarreal said.

Council awards bids on pool renovation, downtown park

ALTUS – Bids were awarded by the city council for a major swimming pool renovation and the downtown park funded by MAPS II. The awards were made at a meeting earlier this month. Thompson’s Pool & Spa Center of Altus received the swimming pool bid which was $2.1 million.

Cafe owner cites lifetime fondness for cooking

ALTUS – Sharon Switzer wouldn’t know what to do if she didn’t own the Sunrise Café, a job she has held since 1997. But Switzer is more than a back-office owner. On any given day, she works the cash register, waits on customers and is the chief cook and bottle washer.

Mission on Wheels continues helping community

ALTUS – God gave Edna Douglas a “vision” 25 years ago to help people in need and her effort continues today, the self-proclaimed missionary said. “He (God) gave me the vision and told me how to do it,” she said.

ALTUS - Kenton McKnight’s dream came true 16 years ago when he and wife Emelia bought Town & Country Bowling Center. McKnight, born and raised in Altus, had bowled numerous times at the old alley which was built in 1959.

New addition means more homes for Altus

ALTUS –  A new residential addition that will provide up to 112 multi-family homes received final approval by the Altus City Council Tuesday, Aug. 3. Bids on the development’s streets, water and sewer systems will be taken in 30-45 days, Altus City Manager Gary Jones said.

Altus names ADA Robbins city attorney

ALTUS – Longtime Jackson County resident Sommer Robbins has been hired as the new city attorney beginning May 24.  Robbins, an assistant district attorney in Jackson County for the past five years, was offered the job after the Altus City Council met in executive session May 4.

Altus reacts to study with new housing plan

ALTUS – City officials are working with a private builder to enhance Altus’ housing supply, which is limited because of retiring civilian employees at Altus Air Force Base, according to a study conducted in 2020.
