Perhaps the weightiest issue Lawton Mayor Stan Booker addressed Wednesday was the meeting with his “Cookie Commission” comprised of preschoolers at Good Years daycare center in Lawton. The committee held a 15-minute meeting over the internet via Zoom, during which they voted on whether to eat an Oreo cookie (unanimous agreement to make it a law), and debated how to eat an Oreo (crème first, or as an entire unit). Booker thanked the youngsters for sending him a plastic water bottle bearing the message, “We love you, Mayor. Be safe and be a smartie.” The postage cost $3.80 and the bottle contained several candy Smarties, he said. “It’s something I’ll keep forever.” The idea for the “commission/committee” began last summer when Booker visited the children’s lemonade stand. “It’s a nice break from the everyday activity,” he said. “And I’m the only mayor in Oklahoma who has a Cookie Commission.”
