Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.59 of an inch for the week of July 17-23, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The July 18 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 50% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 50 points from last year. Additionally, 20% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 80 points from the previous year.
Statewide temperatures averaged in the low 80s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short.
Here’s a look at how crops fared for the week of July 17-23:
Small grains: Oats harvested reached 83%, down 10 points from the previous year and five points from normal.
Row crops: Drier conditions along with warmer temperatures allowed row crops to progress quickly.
Corn silking reached 67%, up six points from the previous year and four points from normal. Corn dough reached 29%, up 26 points from the previous year.
Sorghum headed reached 16%, down 14 points from the previous year and 13 points from normal. Sorghum coloring reached 6%, up two points from the previous year but down one point from normal.
Soybeans emerged reached 91%, down three points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Soybeans blooming reached 45%, up 11 points from the previous year and 15 points from normal. Soybeans setting pods reached 5%, up four points from the previous year.
Peanuts pegging reached 52%, up three points from the previous year and four points from normal.
Cotton squaring reached 79%, up 13 points from the previous year and from normal. Cotton setting bolls reached 25%, up 16 points from the previous year and six points from normal.
Hay: The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 86%, down eight points from the previous year and seven points from normal. The third cutting of alfalfa hay reached 39%, down four points from the previous year and nine points from normal.
The first cutting of other hay reached 95%. The second cutting of other hay reached 31%, down 10 points from the previous year and five points from normal.
Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 83% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 87% good to fair.
