85 recovered bikes donated to Toy Shop

Several dozen bicycles recovered by the Duncan Police Department were declared surplus January 26 by the Duncan City Council and subsequently donated for Christmas gifts.

Most of the bikes were impounded after citizens “found them beside a road somewhere” and notified the police department, said Sabrina Clampitt, a civilian who’s in charge of the police department’s property room.

The 85 bikes are a mixture of boys’ and girls’ bicycles “but mostly boys’,” and range from “stuff that needs work to bicycles that are in brand new condition,” she said.

Although “found” property must be kept for 90 days before being disposed of, “We keep the bicycles for six months to a year” in order to give owners of lost or stolen bikes plenty of time to contact the police department, Ms. Clampitt said.

The surplus bicycles were donated Thursday, January 28, to the Toy Shop in Duncan, which hosts fundraisers to buy Christmas toys for needy children, she said.

Kim Davis, executive director of the Toy Shop, said that bicycles in good condition will be given as Christmas presents to needy children; bikes in poor condition will be cannibalized to repair other bikes or sold at one of the store’s fundraising events.
