Craig Akard will succeed the late James T. Smith as Lawton’s Chief of Police, effective May 11. The announcement was issued Monday.
Akard brings more than 31 years of law enforcement and municipal leadership experience to the role, including more than three decades with the Lawton Police Department.
A graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 263), he most recently served as the city’s Human Resources Director, where he oversaw personnel systems, labor relations, and policy development across all departments.
During his tenure with the LPD, Akard rose through the ranks to captain over Patrol Operations and Criminal Investigations, leading critical incident response efforts and overseeing major investigative functions. Recognized for his ethical leadership, commitment to developing future leaders, and longstanding service to the Lawton community, Akard has played a significant role in shaping organizational policy and strengthening public trust, officials said.
City Manager John Ratliff said the selection process was conducted with careful consideration, given the importance of the role.
“This was not a decision we took lightly,” Ratliff said. “The position of Chief of Police is critical to the safety, trust, and overall well-being of our community. After a thorough and thoughtful process, we are confident Craig Akard is the right leader for this position. His experience, integrity, and deep understanding of this community make him uniquely qualified to lead the Lawton Police Department forward.”
As Chief, Akard will focus on transparency, communication, and continued collaboration with both department personnel and the public.
“While law enforcement has faced challenges in recent years, it remains a profession rooted in service, integrity, and commitment to community,” Akard said. “The pride I feel in being a police officer has never wavered, and I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this department and serve alongside the dedicated men and women who work every day to protect and serve the Lawton community.”
He added that his goal is to continue building strong partnerships and trust with the citizens the department serves, reinforcing Lawton as a safe and welcoming community for residents and visitors alike.
“We’re glad to have him in the building,” Lt. Charles Whittington, the LPD’s spokesman, told Southwest Ledger. “Under his leadership, we look forward to continued progress for our department, for the City of Lawton, and for the citizens we serve.”
Akard succeeds former Police Chief James T. Smith, who died Jan. 22 at the age of 66. Smith had served as chief of the LPD for nearly 14 years.
