Arts and Humanities presentation set for Oct. 7

Body

Lawton’s State of the Arts and Humanities presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Leslie Powell Gallery, located at 620 SW D Ave. in Lawton.

All are invited to attend the event; however, seating is limited.

Mayor Stan Booker will present a proclamation to Jason Poudrier, Lawton’s Arts and Humanities administrator, at the event in recognition of Arts and Humanities Month, according to a news release from City Hall. The event will feature live jazz music, poetry, free wine and light refreshments.

Jazz musicians Josie French and Peter Macias will kick off the event with live music, which will be followed by poetry by Dr. John Morris and the mayor’s proclamation.

Poudrier’s presentation will include an overview of past, current and future Arts and Humanities projects and initiatives supported by the city of Lawton and the McMahon Auditorium Authority, such as creating a sub-granting framework for up to $10,000 to support tourism in Lawton through the arts and humanities, and the return of Lawton’s cultural awards.

Poudrier will also be joined by a representative of Arts for All, whose gala is taking place in person again for the first time in two years on Nov. 4.

The Leslie Powell Gallery is currently host to two exhibits with Oklahoma roots: John D. Rule’s “Fashioning the West” and Krystal Solis’ “Growth.”

Arts and humanities organizations and individuals hosting events scheduled in October are encouraged to submit their events to arts@lawtonok.gov for consideration to be included on a month-long calendar of events celebrating Arts and Humanities Month, which will be published and posted on SWOKARTS.com, a website for arts and humanities events occurring in southwest Oklahoma.

Select programming is made possible in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council, which receives support from the state of Oklahoma and the National Endowment for the Arts.
