In this year’s National Wheat Yield Contest, 12 of the 26 winners were WestBred varieties.
“It really shows that when you take high-performing growers and pair them with high-performing products, a lot can happen in the field,” Bayer WestBred Marketing Manager Carrie Mitchell Roach said. “Really, it’s about their management practices in their area, and planting the right variety for their area.”
She said the best way to find the correct variety is to talk to a local seed supplier about challenges in the field and management practices.
“WestBred takes great pride in making sure that we are helping you find the right variety for the right acre,” Roach said.
Choosing the right variety can be challenging, even for the experts, considering Oklahoma’s widely variable weather patterns. Roach described how some wheat fields that were shaping up very well this year were destroyed by torrential rain.
In Lincoln County, David Ebers of Wellston produced a 350.52% increase over the county average with theWB4422 variety to win first place in the Hard Red Winter Wheat Dryland category.
“He’s a second-time winner, so we are excited for him and for Oklahoma,” Roach said.
Seed suppliers “are happy to help you figure out what you need to get through some of the challenges when it comes to weather, or just some of those management decisions, to make sure that you are getting the highest performance possible out of thoseWestBred varieties.”
