Lawton City Councilwoman Linda Chapman held on to the Ward 3 seat in Tuesday’s primary election, and real estate developer and construction manager George Gill led a three-person race for the Ward 4 seat.

Chapman captured 410 votes, or 71.93% of the total, according to unofficial results from the Oklahoma State Election Board. Her opponent, Cartessa Smith, finished with 160 votes, or 28.07% of the total.

Gill came in first in the Ward 4 race with 344 votes, or 44.73% of the total, according to unofficial results. Curry finished second with 220 votes, or 28.61%.

The third candidate in the race, University Church of Christ Pastor Eric Sharum, finished last with 205 votes – 26.66% of the total.

Neither Gill nor Curry claimed a simple majority of the vote – 50% plus one – so they will both advance to the Nov. 8 ballot. The winner in November will claim the Ward 4 seat on the council.

Jay Burk currently represents Ward 4, but he did not seek re-election this year due to term limits.
