Chickasha Public Library has announced a full slate of summer activities as part of the town’s Festival of Freedom. Activities are planned for every age and to suit a variety of interests.
The Patriotic Book Club is hosted at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays through July 2. Each week a new speaker hosts a discussion on themes including the Declaration of Independence, early library history, American espionage, and more. This program is designed for adults. The Patriotic Book Club schedule includes:
•June 11: Women in American History, with Angie Lewis, member of the Friends of the Library. “Glory, Passion, and Principle: The Story of Eight Remarkable Women at the Core of the American Revolution” by Melissa Lukeman Bohrer; and “Women of the Revolution: Bravery and Sacrifice on the Southern Battlefields” by Robert M. Dunkerly.
•June 18: “1776” by David McCullough, with Library volunteer Charles Wheeler.
•June 25: “Early Library History” with Reference Librarian Michelle Skinner.
•July 2: “Washington’s Spies” by Alexander Rose, with Betsy Phillips, president of Friends of the Library and history teacher at Ninnekah High School.
Step back in time and learn a new skill with the Colonial Crafting series. Classes are held on select Fridays in June at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Registration is required for all Colonial Crafting programs. The schedule is:
•June 12: 10 a.m. – Mason jar herbed butter (all ages); 2 p.m. – homemade herbal sugar scrubs (all ages).
•June 26: 10 a.m. – Mason jar ice cream (all ages); 2 p.m. – cross stitch (ages 10+).
History comes to life at The Living Library: America Through the Decades. During a three-hour comeand- go program, 25 children will be dressed up in period costumes celebrating the last 250 years of American history. The Living Library is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13.
On Friday, June 26, at 7 p.m., adults ages 18 and older are invited to Whispers From The Past: American History Ghost Stories. This program is for adults only, and children will not be allowed at the library during the afterhours event.
Test your knowledge of American history at the trivia event, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 27. Come with your own team or join one when you arrive. Individuals are welcome.
The library also will host Beanstack Challenges for children and for adults. The winner of the adult Beanstack Challenge will receive a patriotic cornhole game, and the winner of the children’s category will receive a gift basket. Awards will be presented during 4th of July activities at Shannon Springs Park. Beanstack is a mobile and web application used to host reading challenges and track reading progress.
Prize drawings will be held during each Patriotic Book Club meeting, at the American History Ghost Stories event, at the American History Trivia event, and at The Living Library.
