City of Lawton adopts new safety measures

LAWTON — City officials have adopted new security measures at City Hall to ensure a safer environment for citizens and employees, officials said in a news release.

A walk-through metal detector was installed June 5 at the building’s main entrance to identify any potential weapons that may be brought in.

To complement these measures, security cameras have already been installed and will monitor activities within the building, according to the news release. The cameras will provide an extra layer of safety and deterrence.

People carrying dangerous items, including firearms and knives, will be asked to return the items to their vehicle before entering the facility. These items will not be confiscated.

Carrying firearms into certain places, including City Hall, is prohibited under state law. The law restricts the possession of handguns in any building or office space owned or leased by the government for the purpose of conducting business with the public.

“By adhering to these new security precautions, we can collectively create a safer and more secure environment at City Hall,” officials said. “We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work towards ensuring the well-being of everyone within the facility.”

Purcell City Treasurer Victor Lohn was injured last year at Purcell City Hall in a dispute with resident Johnny Shawn over whether Shawn’s utilities had been turned off, KFOR-TV reported in October 2022. The dispute escalated into a confrontation in the customer service area, where Shawn allegedly attacked Lohn.

The treasurer was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released, according to KFOR. Shawn was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and aggravated assault and battery causing great bodily injury.

The charges against Shawn were later dropped, according to KFOR.
