LAWTON – Comanche County’s burn ban is back.
The Board of Comanche County Commissioners voted Monday to reinstate the ban, which will remain in place for two weeks. However, the commission could decide to extend the ban on a week-by-week basis.
The original burn ban, which was implemented Dec. 30, 2021, was allowed to expire Feb. 22 because county officials expected cold, wet weather toward the end of the week.
But now that drier weather has returned, officials are predicting a high level of fire danger by the end of the week, said Emergency Management Director Clint Langford.
“I took a poll of all the fire chiefs, and the majority is that we reinstitute the burn ban now that the ice and stuff has melted,” he said.
Under the ban, people may not set fire to forest land or any other type of wild land, The ban also applies to campfires, bonfires and burning trash or other materials that could start a grass fire.
