Crop report: Drought conditions worsen; small grain progress mixed

Oklahoma saw cooler temperatures last week, with four of the nine districts reporting lows on Oct.16 at or below freezing.

The state had virtually no rain was reported last week, averaging 0.02 of an inch.

Drought conditions were rated 59% abnormally dry to severe drought, up 14 points from the previous week, according to the Oct. 13 U.S. Drought Monitor Report. Additionally, 32% of the state was in the moderate drought to extreme drought category, a 10-point increase from the previous week. 

Temperatures averaged in the low 60s across the state.

Small grains: Planted winter wheat reached 74%, down three points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Emerged winter was at 47%, a decline of 16 points from the previous year and six points from normal.

Planted canola reached 30%, unchanged from the previous year but down 38 points from normal.

Planted rye reached 50%, down two points from the previous year and 25 points from normal.

Planted oats reached 31%, up 13 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. 

Row crops: Corn harvested reached 72%, up four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. 

Mature sorghum came in at 88%, down two points from the previous year and one point from normal. Harvested sorghum reached 47%, up two points from the previous year but down four points from normal.

Soybeans dropping leaves reached 69%, up six points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Harvested soybeans reached 28%, up 11 points from the previous year and four points from normal.

Mature peanuts reached 69%, down five points from the previous year and five points from normal. Harvested peanuts were at 33%, down two points from the previous year and one point from normal.

Cotton bolls opening reached 91%, down one point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Harvested cotton reached 16%, down three points from the previous year but up one point from normal. 

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 31%, up 31 points from the previous year and 13 points higher than normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 51%, up two points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 66% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 93% good to fair.
