Crop report: Much of state still abnormally dry

Oklahoma got a taste of winter weather from a weekend cold front, with four of the nine districts reporting lows in the 20s.

Rainfall totals averaged 0.18 of an inch across the state last week, with the southwest district reporting the highest totals at 0.46 of an inch.

Drought conditions were rated 63% abnormally dry to severe drought, up four points from the previous week, according to the Oct. 20 U.S. Drought Monitor Report. Additionally, 38% of the state was in the moderate to extreme drought category, up six points from the previous week. Statewide, temperatures averaged in the mid-50s. Here’s a look at how various crops fared:

Small grains: Planted winter wheat reached 82%, down four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Emerged winter wheat came in at 66%, down eight points from last year but unchanged from normal. Planted canola reached 76%, up 33 points from last year but unchanged from normal. Planted rye came in at 86%, up 11 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Emerged rye reached 45%, up 37 points from last year but down six points from normal. Planted oats reached 41%, up 12 points from the previous year but unchanged from normal.

Row crops: Harvested corn reached 82%, up one point from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Mature sorghum reached 95%, unchanged from the previous year but up two points from normal. Harvested sorghum reached 55%, down three points from the previous year and five points from normal. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 75%, up two points from the previous year but down three points from normal. Harvested soybeans reached 33%, up five points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. Mature peanuts reached 86%, unchanged from the previous year and from normal. Opening cotton bolls reached 95%, up one point from the previous year and one point from normal. Harvested cotton reached 21%, down six points from the previous year and four points from normal.

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 37%, up 37 points from the previous year and one point from normal. The third cutting of other hay reached 55%, up one point from last year but unchanged from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 67% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 89% good to fair.
