Crop Report: Small grains mixed; soybeans, cotton up

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 0.06 of an inch for the week of Nov. 22-28, with the northeast and east-central districts reporting the highest totals at 0.20 of an inch, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

According to the Nov. 23 U.S. Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 80% abnormally dry to exceptionally dry, up 3% from the previous week. Additionally, 42% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought category, up 5% from the previous week.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the high 40s. Topsoil moisture conditions were rated mostly adequate to short, while subsoil moisture conditions were rated short to adequate.

Here’s a snapshot of crop progress for the week of Nov. 22-28:

Small grains: Canola emerged reached 91%, down three points from the previous year but up two points from normal.

Rye emerged reached 95%, down four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal/

Oats planted reached 73%, up four points from the previous year and five points from normal. Oats emerged reached 51%, unchanged from the previous year but up two points from normal.

Row crops: Soybeans harvested reached 87%, up four points from the previous year and six points from normal.

Cotton harvested reached 84%, up six points from the previous year and eight points from normal.

Hay: The fifth cutting of alfalfa hay reached 56%, unchanged from the previous year but up 16 points from normal.

The third cutting of other hay reached 79%, up four points from the previous year but unchanged from normal. The fourth cutting of other hay reached 49%, unchanged from the previous year but down four points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 77% fair to good. Livestock condition was rated at 90% good to fair.
