A filmmaker believes America’s power grid is “vulnerable” and “susceptible” to attacks from hackers and foreign governments who want to cause harm to the United States.
David Tice, producer of the documentary “Grid Down, Power Up,” spoke to Hilliary Media Group during the Conservative Political Action Conference held in Washington, D.C., in early March. Tice said the film outlines the risk and consequences of the U.S. power grid going down, leaving the nation without electricity for an extended period of time. The film examines how the nation’s power grid became so vulnerable and how the government and private sector can resolve the problem moving forward.
If the nation’s power grid goes down, it will cut off electricity and water systems causing a breakdown in society, Tice said. A grid failure could be caused by a physical attack, electromagnetic attack, extreme weather or cyberattack, he said.
The U.S. already has experienced cyberattacks on pipelines and in North Carolina where 16,000 homes were left without power for several days. The documentary also recalls previous blackout events like the 2003 power failures in some Northeastern states and the Texas power grid failure in February 2021.
U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) and almost two dozen Texas lawmakers have shown support for creating legislation that provides better security for the nation’s power grid, Tice said.
Actor Dennis Quaid is the narrator for the 55-minute documentary.
