Duncan to conduct tornado exercise March 10

From staff reports DUNCAN – Duncan Emergency Management, along with participating community partners and the U.S. National Weather Service in Norman, will conduct a community tornado exercise at approximately 12:30 p.m. March 10, off icials said in a news release.

For the exercise, the sirens will f irst sound the rising and falling wail at 12:30 p.m. for three minutes to signal a mock tornado warning, according to the news release. Citizens are encouraged to participate in the exercise at home, implementing their severe weather plan and taking tornado precautions by moving indoors, consulting a media source or weather app, and taking shelter.

To complete the exercise, the “all clear” siren will sound at approximately 12:50 p.m., which is signaled by a steady pitch siren for three minutes. Citizens are encouraged to discuss how their severe weather plan worked and make any adjustments to their plan that will help them be as safe as possible if a weather- related emergency ever arises.

The exercise will demonstrate: • The city’s RAVE Alert system’s ability to notify the community of a tornado warning.

• The outdoor warning system’s to notify the community of a tornado warning

• The ability of pa rticipating residents, businesses, health care facilities and schools to shelter in place for a tornado warning.

The exercise will be postponed if an actual emergency occurs between 11:30 a.m. and 12:50 p.m., or if the weather on March 10 is inclement.

If the exercise is postponed by Emergency Management, all participating community partners will be notified and the date will be rescheduled.

During regular Monday testing at noon of the city ’s siren system throughout the year, the sirens sound the “all clear” signal f irst followed by the warning signal, with the test l asting for approximately three minutes.
