From staff reports DUNCAN – The Duncan Police Department has joined OffenderWatch, a registry network for sex or violent offenders which helps local, state and federal agencies across the country collaborate on offender records to know immediately when offenders are moving into their jurisdictions, city officials said in a news release.

Founded in 2000 in Covington, Louisiana, Offender-Watch provides a variety of services to sheriffs’ offices, police departments, attorneys general offices, U.S. Marshal judicial districts, U.S. attorneys, federal and state probation and parole agents, departments of corrections, Native American tribes and partners with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Canada, officials said. The network makes it easier for agencies to register offenders, verify their addresses, update critical information, collaborate on investigations and alert the public.

Duncan residents can use the website to search for offenders residing in their neighborhood and subscribe to receive email alerts at http://www.communitynotification. com/ok/Duncan.

The OffenderWatch mobile app is also available for download on both Android and iPhone smartphone devices, officials said. The app locates registered sex offenders near parents and their children and identifies online contact from registered sex offenders through a child’s electronic device or if their device lingers near an offender’s residence, instantly alerting parents to the communication.

The app also offers online safety information and tips for how to talk to children about sex offenders.

“The OffenderWatch program is a used tool nationwide to enhance interagency collaboration and streamline the sharing of critical information related to registered sex/violent offenders,” said Duncan Police Chief Attaway. “At (the) city of Duncan, our top priority is the safety and well-being of our community.

“This program not only strengthens investigative efforts but also empowers our residents by providing timely alerts and updates about potential safety concerns in their neighborhoods. We are proud to offer our citizens greater peace of mind through proactive communication and transparency, and I extend my sincere appreciation to the Criminal Investigation Division, Emergency Management and the Public Works departments for their dedication and teamwork throughout the implementation of this program.”
