Geiger Eye Care enjoys serving southwest Oklahoma families

LAWTON - When Michael and Shaun Geiger were blessed with quadruplets, they probably had no idea that two of the children were going to follow in dad’s footsteps.

Dr. Geiger has become a common name in the family. Dad, Dr. Michael Geiger, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cameron University in 1990. He then earned his optometry degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah. Upon graduating, he worked alongside Dr. Joseph Young at the Young Eye Institute in Lawton. Eventually, Dr. Geiger was able to begin his own practice in Altus.

Two of the Geiger quadruplets and a younger daughter are following their father’s career path. Bryce and Seth Geiger graduated with honors from Cameron in 2013 and earned degrees from Northeastern State University’s Oklahoma College of Optometry. Now, younger sister Maddie is also pursuing her degree in optometry from Northeastern State. With an abundance of optometrists in the Geiger family, they have begun expanding across southwestern Oklahoma.

FREDERICK, ELGIN

In September 2017, the Geigers opened the Frederick office. With things moving right along and a lot of encouragement from friends in the area, in December 2018, the Geigers decided to open an office in Elgin. Growing up in the small town of Snyder, Elgin just seemed to be the perfect place, explained Dr. Bryce.

After eight months in Elgin, Geiger Eye Care is seeing results that are “better than expected,” said Dr. Bryce. “Its been surprisingly busy, and we’re seeing a lot of patients from Elgin and the surrounding towns.”

Because both Altus and Frederick were purchased practices that had already been established, they came with existing patients. But Elgin didn’t. When the Elginoffice first opened, they onlyhad a doctor in office three days a week. Now that busi- ness is picking up, an optom- etrist is available most days, explained Dr. Bryce.

Acquiring new patients “was challenging,” he said. But by taking part in local events like Elgin’s annual Crawds ‘N Rods and providing screenings with the Elgin Community Library, as well as launching a Back-to-School Bash for Elgin students, Geiger Eye Care has gained a pretty good foothold in the surrounding communities.

Usually, it's recommended that patients get checked every year to detect health issues such as diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma. “Diabetes can cause severe loss of vision earlier in life - 20s, 30s or 40s - if not controlled,” said Dr. Bryce. “Glaucoma and macular degeneration usually happen later.”

“We are trained to take care of eye emergencies,” said Dr. Michael Rice. “Whether it’s a piece of metal, grass, or an allergic reaction, we can treat it,” added Dr Bryce. For more details, or to schedule an appointment, visit www.geigereyecare.net.
