From staff reports Altus City Manager Gary Jones has received one of the highest honors from Altus Air Force Base last week: the Friend of Altus award.

Given only to those who have played a key role in supporting the base and its operations, the award recognizes Jones for his ongoing support, leadership and dedication to the community and its military partners.

In a news release, the Altus Chamber of Commerce praised Jones for his commitment and dedication, calling the recognition a fitting tribute for his years of service.

“Gary is a ‘get it done’ guy,” the release said. “Each and every day he rolls up his sleeves and goes to work for Altus… not for the recognition, but because he truly cares.”

For the past six years, Jones, who served as the State Auditor and Inspector from 2011 to 1019, has worked as Altus’ city manager, focusing on improving local services, supporting growth and building a strong partnership with Altus Air Force Base.

The chamber highlighted his commitment in making tough decisions, saying, “Gary’s role is often a very thankless job, but he continues pouring himself into our community and into AAFB for one reason and one reason only… he has a servant’s heart who loves Altus and our military.”

One of the base’s most prestigious honors, the Friend of Altus award is reserved for individuals who go the extra mile in their support for Altus Air Force Base and the men and women who serve there. The award highlights the strong connection between the city and the base.

“Tonight was a special night watching him receive the praise and recognition he deserves,” the Chamber said. “The base got it right when they named him a ‘Friend of Altus.’ Our community is truly blessed to be able to call him ours.”

Jones’ recognition reflects the importance of leadership and sense of community essential for growth and strong partnerships.
