Juvenile Detention Center roof leaks to be patched

LAWTON – Ford Roofing will patch leaks in the roof of the Comanche County Regional Juvenile Detention Center, and the county commissioners will consider whether to replace the whole roof.

Patching the roof is “essential for us” because it has four leaks, Miranda Morales, director of the detention center, told the commissioners Monday. “We have 25 kids I have to protect.”

The roof is “beyond 20 years old and is failing,” said Jeff Young, owner of Ford Roofing and Sheet Metal. The roof was replaced in 2005, Morales said.

According to an insurance document, the CCRJDC roof encompasses 13,000 square feet, the county commissioners were told.

Installing a new roof would cost approximately $360,000, an estimate submitted by Young indicated.

In another matter Monday, the commissioners approved contracts and agreements for juvenile detention services “by and between” Comanche County and Jackson, Cotton, Greer, Love, McClain, Osage, Coal, Harmon and Seminole counties.

During their June 29 meeting the Comanche County commissioners approved similar agreements with Custer, Beckham, Jefferson, Kay, Stephens and Kay counties.

Admission of any juveniles from any of those counties is “subject to the availability of space and the rules of admission of the Detention Center.” Also, each of the counties will be charged $69 per day for each juvenile detained in the CCRJDC.
