Late April brings more rain to Oklahoma

From staff reports Heavy rain continued across the state between April 28 and May 4, with many areas experiencing flooding in low-lying croplands, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 2.83 inches. The NASS said according to the April 29 U.S. Drought Monitor Report, drought conditions were rated 33% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, down 26 points from the previous year. Additionally, 14% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, down 14 points from the previous year.

Statewide temperatures averaged in the 60s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to surplus. There were 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Here’s a look at how crops fared for the week of April 28-May 4, according to the NASS: Small grains: Winter wheat jointing reached 96%, up six points from the previous week. Winter wheat headed reached 60%, up 16 points from the previous week but down three points from normal.

Canola blooming reached 65%, up 15 points from the previous week but down seven points from normal. Canola coloring reached 12%, up 12 points from the previous week but down two points from normal.

Rye jointing reached 95%, up 12 points from the previous. Rye headed reached 39%, up 20 points from the previous week but down 18 points from normal.

Oats jointing reached 57%, up seven points from the previous week but down three points from normal. Oats headed reached 11%, up 11 points from the previous week but down six points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 45%, up 11 points from the previous week and four points from normal. Corn emerged reached 19%, up nine points from the previous week but unchanged from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 19%, up two points from the previous week and 10 points from normal Soybeans planted reached 15%, up four points from the previous week and four points from normal.

Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 77% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 86% good to fair.
