LAWTON – The City Council endorsed the list of 10 street repaving projects recommended by the newly created Streets, Roads and Bridges Committee.

All of the targeted streets will be resurfaced in a known as mill and overlay. Chris Serrano, project manager with EST civil engineering firm, estimated the projects will cost $2.1 million.

The list includes the ward where the project is located.

• Cache Road from NE Flower Mound Road to NE 45th Street. (0.9 mile) Ward 4.

• NW 17th Street from Gore Boulevard to Ferris Avenue. (0.45 mile) Ward 5.

• NW 53rd Street from Cache Road to Gore Boulevard. (0.8 mile) Wards 3 and 8.

• NW 31st Street from Gore Boulevard to Arlington Avenue. (0.2 mile) Ward 3.

• NW 6th Street from Gore Boulevard to Ferris Avenue. (0.45 mile) Ward 5.

• SW Bishop Road from SW 11th Street to SW 6th Street. (0.45 mile) Ward 7.

• NW Willow Creek Drive from NW 67th Street to NW Micklegate Boulevard. (0.65 mile) Ward 6.

• NW Pollard Avenue from NW 46th Street to where Pollard turns into NW 43rd Street and continues to NW 40th Street. (0.45 mile) Ward 1.

• SW Crystal Hills Drive from West Gore Boulevard to SW 76th Street. (0.2 mile) Ward 8.

• Rogers Lane from East Cache Creek bridge to NE Flower Mound Road. (0.4 mile) Ward 2.

“These are some of the worst streets in Lawton,” said Ward 2 Councilman Kelly Harris, a member of the new committee. “We also looked at traffic counts, which factored into the selection of these streets.”

Resurfacing with asphalt will extend the life of the streets for perhaps five to ten years, Serrano said. “The subbase of these streets is still in good condition,” he said. “The integrity of the roads is good” but patching will be required at some locations,” he added.

“This is a temporary fix,” Harris said.

“This will be the second time in 20 years that 53rd Street” has received an asphalt overlay, Ward 8 Councilman Randy Warren said. But that will be much cheaper than total reconstruction of the three-lane street at a cost of approximately $7 million, he noted.

The package of projects can be let for bids before Thanksgiving next month, and construction on all 10 streets should be completed within 60 days after the work starts, Serrano said.

Meanwhile, “We’re selecting another 10 streets now,” Kelly told his colleagues on Oct. 10.

“We want to have 40 of these projects done by Thanksgiving 2024,” Mayor Stan Booker said.
