LAWTON – The Lawton City Council signed off Tuesday on an agreement to provide support for the Lawton Youth Sports Trust Authority through the end of the fiscal year.
With no discussion, the council voted 7-0 to approve the agreement, which provides limited financial assistance and other forms of aid during the authority’s start-up phase. Councilman Randy Warren was absent.
The item was part of the council’s consent agenda, which is designed for routine matters and does not require discussion unless a council member asks to pull an item for separate consideration. The council approves items on the consent agenda with a single vote.
Under the agreement, the city will give the authority up to $5,000, which will help cover the cost of switching from city-run sports programs to authority-run programs, for the rest of fiscal year 2021-22. The agreement will expire June 30, but it may be renewed when the authority submits a budget proposal for fiscal year 2022-23, which begins July 1.
All expenditures will be in accordance with the authority’s proposed budget, which is subject to council approval. Payment claims will be processed by the city and paid to the authority, in keeping with the city’s policies for paying contractual claims.
The authority may ask to include any unspent money in the authority’s budget for the next fiscal year, but the request would be subject to council approval.
As part of the agreement, the city will print fliers and other materials for the authority, but materials from other entities assisting in the support of authority-managed facilities will not be printed at the city’s print shop. Printing assistance will be available to the authority only while the print shop is operating.
The authority will reimburse the city for its actual printing costs.
The agreement requires the authority to submit a progress report to the council by June 11.
In other business, the council:
- Set the dates for upcoming primary and general elections for three council seats.
The filing period for the Ward 3, 4 and 5 seats will run from June 13-15. The primary election is set for Aug. 23, with a runoff election scheduled for Nov. 8 if necessary.
Candidates for the Ward 3, 4 or 5 seats must live in those wards. Ward maps are available on the city’s website, www.lawtonok.gov.
- Approved a $75,000 grant to Lawton Public Schools to conduct summer STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) academies this summer.
The council acted on a recommendation from the city’s Youth and Family Affairs Committee.
