Medicare Advantage Is About Protecting Health Security and Choice for Oklahoma Seniors

Body

For many of us in Oklahoma, the values we hold dearest are freedom, choice, and personal responsibility. Those principles don’t fade as we age; if anything, they matter more. And that’s why Medicare Advantage has become so important to me and to seniors across our state. It’s not just a health plan. It’s a program that lets us live with dignity, choose what works best for our individual needs, and stretch our hard-earned dollars further.

When I first became eligible for Medicare, I was overwhelmed by the maze of options, costs, and gaps in coverage. Traditional Medicare left me wondering how I would pay for the basics, like dental care or prescription drugs. Medicare Advantage solved that problem. It brought my care together in one place—my doctors, my medications, and even preventive benefits that help me stay healthier instead of waiting until I’m sick.

Medicare Advantage is not just a plan. It is peace of mind. That’s clear when you consider that 92 percent of its beneficiaries oppose any cuts in funding. Seniors like me know what works, and we know what we stand to lose if Washington undermines this program.

What makes Medicare Advantage so valuable is that it is practical, cost-effective, and responsive to real needs. It saves seniors money, helps us avoid surprise bills, and provides benefits that align with how people live today. It is not an extravagance. It is the kind of commonsense solution that keeps people healthier and communities stronger.

Too often, the debate in Washington misses that point. Some policymakers see Medicare Advantage as just another line item in the budget. But here in Oklahoma, it is the foundation of our health security. It keeps us from having to choose between groceries and prescriptions. It caps out-of-pocket costs so that a hospital stay does not wipe out our savings. And it gives us the flexibility to select the plan that works best for our individual circumstances.

That freedom is what makes the program so important to protect. Proposals to cut funding or pile on new regulations risk taking away the very choice that makes Medicare Advantage work. For rural states like ours, those cuts would hit especially hard. Seniors in small towns can’t always drive hours for care. We depend on the local networks and coordinated services that Medicare Advantage provides.

I know that Oklahomans take pride in being self-reliant. But self-reliance does not mean going without support. It means having the right tools to stay strong and independent. For me, Medicare Advantage is one of those tools. It has allowed me to manage my health, keep costs predictable, and maintain control over the care I receive.

That’s why I am calling on our congressional delegation— including Senators Lankford and Mullin and Congresswoman Bice—to stand up for Oklahoma’s seniors. Protect Medicare Advantage from short-sighted cuts. Strengthen it so that more of us can continue to benefit. And recognize it for what it is: a program that reflects Oklahoma’s values of freedom, choice, and personal responsibility.

Medicare Advantage is not just about health coverage. It is about protecting the ability of Oklahoma seniors to live with security, stability, and peace of mind. And that is something worth defending.
