OKLAHOMA CITY — A proposed commuter rail between Edmond and Norman took a detour with the withdrawal of three communities from the Regional Transportation Authority.
Midwest City, Moore and Del City left the Regional Transportation Authority, the Oklahoman reported. But the goal remains to build a commuter rail between Edmond and Norman and a rapid transit to Tinker Air Force Base.
Yukon may be joining the venture, the Oklahoman reported. Discussions center on Yukon and whether it might be part of a potential west link, the Oklahoman reported.
“We think there is great value in providing commuter rail to whatever communities want to be a part of it,” Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt told the Oklahoman.
“Most people have dreamed of a north-south line with Edmond to Norman with Oklahoma City in between. As long as we maintain those two end points, we still have the means in play.”
The Oklahoman reported Midwest City, Moore and Del City community leaders cited costs as reasons for withdrawing from the Authority.
Del City and Midwest City were to “anchor a corridor between the Santa Fe station and Tinker Air Force Base,” the Oklahoman reported.
