Oklahoma storms bring wind, hail

Parts of the state recently experienced severe storms bringing strong winds and some hail. 

Rainfall totals in Oklahoma averaged 1.67 inches between June 12-18, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The June 13 U.S. Drought Monitor Report said drought conditions were rated 65% abnormally dry to exceptional drought, up 25 points from last year. Additionally, 49% of the state was in the moderate to exceptional drought categories, up 19 points from the previous year. 

Statewide temperatures averaged in the low 70s. Topsoil and subsoil moisture conditions were rated adequate to short.

Here’s a snapshot of how crops performed for the week of June 12-18, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service:

Small grains: Wheat harvest was progressing slowly due to recent rains. Winter wheat harvested reached 40%, down 26 points from the previous year and 14 points from normal. 

Canola coloring reached 95%, up one point from the previous year and from normal. Canola harvested reached 35%, down 10 points from the previous year and 15 points from normal.

Rye harvested reached 44%, down four points from the previous year and from normal. 

Oats headed reached 88%, down one point from the previous year but up one point from normal. Oats harvested reached 12%, down six points from the previous year and five points from normal.

Row crops: Corn planted reached 95%, unchanged from the previous year but up one point from normal. Corn emerged reached 83%, down five points from the previous year and three points from normal. Corn silking reached 8%, up four points from the previous year and two points from normal.

Sorghum planted reached 50%, down eight points from the previous year and nine points from normal.

Soybeans planted reached 62%, down two points from the previous year and from normal. Soybeans emerged reached 30%, down nine points from the previous year. 

Peanuts planted reached 95%, up 18 points from the previous year and 10 points from normal. 

Cotton planted reached 81%, up five points from the previous year and three points from normal.

Hay: The first cutting of alfalfa hay reached 82%, down two points from the previous year and three points from normal. The second cutting of alfalfa hay reached 20%, down two points from the previous year and 12 points from normal. 

The first cutting of other hay reached 61%, down six points from the previous year and from normal. Pasture and livestock: Pasture and range condition was rated at 82% good to fair. Livestock condition was rated at 87% good to fair.
