From staff reports OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Wheat Commission’s Mike Schulte recently gave an update on the Sooner State’s wheat crop.

“I would say this year, in some ways, is mirroring what we saw last year.” Schulte said. “Not as bad as with the drought conditions we had going into this crop as of last year because we did get some rains, certainly in the winter months.”

In northwest and certain areas of north central Oklahoma, Schulte said, weather conditions have caused challenges for wheat producers.

“There are areas up there that have gone 100 days without a quarter inch of rain,” he said.

Despite some hail, Schulte said the south-central Oklahoma crop is looking hopeful.

Comparing Oklahoma’s wheat production to the rest of the nation, he said many areas are suffering from drought, adding that 97% of Kansas is still in severe drought.

“It (the drought) really is having an impact on our crop in the region of the hard red winter wheat belt,” he said.
